Pope Benedict XVI on Climate Change (Updated)

From the UK’s Daily Mail:

Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

The leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics suggested that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters were nothing more than scare-mongering.

The German-born Pontiff said that while some concerns may be valid it was vital that the international community based its policies on science rather than the dogma of the environmentalist movement.

Well that settles it then.

Surprisingly enough the crew at Uncommon Descent have linked approvingly to the Pope’s comments. Maybe they could recommend he become the next in line for a fellowship with the Discovery Institute. I mean, he’s achieved the entry requirement of telling a whole field of scientists they’re not doing science and that they’re merely enslaved to dogma. It’s only fair.

Update: Tim Lambert finds that journalist Simon Caldwell was being somewhat creative in his interpretation of the Pope’s comments.  I have to admit I was a little suspicious that the phrase climate change prophets of doom wasn’t placed in quotation marks.
